How to Stay Sun-Safe This Summer: Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreen Showdown!

Sun seekers rejoice! It's that time of year again, the days are getting longer, the temperatures are creeping higher. It's official, Summer's on its way! It's nearly time to soak up those long, sun-drenched days, but we've gotta make sure we're prepared if we want to enjoy this season to the fullest, whilst keeping our skin healthy and happy at the same time!

So how do we protect our skin?

There are many ways we can protect our skin from sun damage, one of which is avoiding the sun... but where's the fun in that?

We can use physical methods such as wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, covering up and keeping our skin covered.

We can also use high SPF (sun protection factor) sunscreen - this way we can still enjoy the sun and keep our skin thriving!

When it comes to sun protection, there are two main types of sunscreen - chemical and physical (also known as mineral) sunscreen.

Chemical vs Physical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreen contains ingredients that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. Chemical sunscreens are usually lightweight and easy to apply, making them a popular choice. However, they can also irritate the skin, clog pores, and cause allergic reactions.. there's also some research to show that chemical sunscreens contain ingredients that can be endocrine (hormone) disruptors, so if you have a sensitive system, opting for a physical sunscreen may be a wise choice for you).

Physical sunscreen, on the other hand, contains ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that physically block UV rays from penetrating the skin. This type of sunscreen is non-irritating, non-comedogenic, and less likely to cause allergies. It's also gentle enough for sensitive skin and provides instant sun protection.

Overall, physical sunscreen is a safer and more natural option for sun protection. It doesn't contain harmful chemicals, is gentle on the skin, is better for the environment, and provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Whether you opt for a chemical or physical sunscreen, always ensure it's a broad-spectrum and high-factor sunscreen.... like our own SPF product, Throwing Shade!

Throwing Shade

If you're in the market for a physical / mineral sunscreen, we got you boo!

Throwing shade is made with the natural ingredient zinc oxide which physically blocks UV rays from penetrating the skin.

It's gentle, non-toxic, and won't cause any skin irritations or allergies so ideal for those who suffer from sensitive or acne-prone skin.

It delivers 100% broad-spectrum mineral sun protection (the highest protection you can get) with a blend of fatty acids to maintain the skin's lipid barrier, i.e keep your skin moisturised and hydrated!

It's water-resistant, so you can splash around without worrying about your sunscreen washing away and having to reapply more than every 2 hours (that's the recommended reapplication rate).

It's got a trio of curcuminoids, the most effective form of turmeric thrown into the mix to help protect the skin against free radical activity, reduce inflammation and may help prevent skin discoloration.

So if you want your skin to not just survive, but THRIVE this Summer season, get your hands on a high-factor SPF sunscreen. It's time to throw some shade at those harmful UV rays and enjoy the sunshine safely!
